This month’s content is a special video discussion with guests Dr. Michelle Oing and Dr. Christian Greer. Due to a last-minute change in plans, Michelle and Christian join me to talk about their new book, Void Machines, that came out of their previous book about pilgrimage, Kumano Kodo. As Michelle explains, this book is a showcase of Christian’s collage artwork, and it ‘offers a process of reintegration,’ or, in other words, ‘keeping the lessons of the pilgrimage road always present in our own lives,’ because it’s so easy to lose the specialness of the experience so easily. ‘Void Machines’ is a memorable term for the tips/techniques/practices that Christian and Michelle use to remember some of the insights that they had while on the road. The images have a talismanic quality, and are little objects that emit a disruptive frequency which disrupt everyday patters and routines. They help one to remember their meaningful self-motivated projects, instead of looking to external sources of value as a means of understanding one’s own life. ‘Peak experiences’ on pilgrimage aren’t reinforced by culture. That (culture) is ‘silenced’ when walking the road. One’s consciousness changes dramatically, and it’s because it’s no longer being conditioned by all of the routines and cultural practices that define one’s everyday life in the workaday world.
